We rolled into Sloan's shop in Boulder with a custom slider built for a tent rail nobody else had spec'd for. Two hours later, his Geo Solo was on a Sherpa rack on a 60-series Land Cruiser. Sloan's installed a lot of tents on low-profile racks. He timed this one at five minutes once measurements were dialed. His words: "a pretty awesome solution."
What makes a low-profile rack hard
A low-profile rack sits flush to the roofline. It looks clean. It saves a bit of fuel. And it leaves you about an inch of working room between the rack and the tent. That gap is where every traditional RTT mount fights you.
Most setups force you to remove the fairing or pull a crossbar to access the mounting points. Sloan does this for a living and he flagged it: low-profile racks make a normal install slow and frustrating.
The Land Cruiser, the rack, the tent
- Vehicle: 60-series Toyota Land Cruiser.
- Rack: Sherpa low-profile.
- Tent: Geo Solo from Intrepid Camp Gear — narrow, one-man, with mounting rails that don't match other brands.
The Geo Solo's rail spec is the wrinkle. We got it ahead of time and built a custom slider assembly to mate with their rail. The mount is the same; the slider is custom. That's the trade-off we make for tents that don't follow the iKamper / Roofnest convention.
How the install actually went
Front mounts fixed in place. Rear mounts moving. That's the inversion of our usual setup, and it changed which crossbars to clamp onto. We landed on the gutter-rail-supported crossbars — most stable point on the rack.
One thing we learned: get measurements right BEFORE the tent is on the rack. Adjusting after the tent is up is harder than it needs to be. Note for your install.
Sloan's read
After it was on, Sloan called the rod-running-front-to-rear unfamiliar at first. Then he called it a worthwhile trade-off — easier rear access, solid hold, simpler than what he's used to fighting. He timed install/removal at five minutes once the measurements are right.
His exact phrase for the system: "a pretty awesome solution" for low-profile racks. Coming from someone who installs these for a living, that's the proof point that matters.
The one-inch lift question
The mount adds a one-inch lift between tent and crossbar. That sounds like a downside on paper. Two reasons it's actually the point:
- Stops the rattle. Most low-profile-rack rattle comes from direct crossbar-to-tent-frame contact. The lift breaks the contact.
- Adds awning room. That extra inch is where a 270° awning bracket fits. Without it, you fabricate custom mounts (ask Kevin).
For a daily-driver setup with awnings, the one inch is the feature, not the cost.

That same low-profile thinking is the Slipstream — the production mount on the site.
