Our Story
What Is the Stark Side?
Not everything needs to shine. Camping is not always quiet mornings and perfect sunsets.
It is rain when you did not plan for it. Gear that does not always cooperate. Campsite neighbors who did not get the memo.
The Stark Side is where those moments live, and where better gear gets built.
Why We Exist — Built for Real Frustration
Stark Side Gear started the same way most good ideas do: with gear that did not make life easier.
We were not chasing perfection. We just wanted things to work when they needed to. So we started building solutions for problems no one likes to talk about.
The first one was simple. Rooftop tents are great until you have to take one off. Leave it on and you eat the fuel hit, the handling hit, the garage clearance hit, the car-wash hit. Take it off the old way and you spend half a Saturday wrestling bolts with a friend you have to bribe with beer.
So we built the Slipstream, a quick-release mount that drops the install from 30 minutes plus a buddy down to about three minutes completely solo. Then we built the Gatekeeper for people who need a lock on the same tent at the trailhead overnight.
That is the whole catalog.
Welcome to the Stark Side
Adventure is not always cinematic. Sometimes it is cold coffee, wet gear, missing hardware, and plans that do not go according to plan.
That is where we live.
The Stark Side is not about being perfect. It is about being honest. It is where the real stories live: the forgotten lighter, the broken table, the storm that wrecked your plans but somehow turned into the best memory of the trip.
We are not chasing the glossy version of adventure. We are building gear for the one that actually happens.
How It Started
Stark Side Gear began with two campers, Ana and Trevor, who loved getting outside but were tired of pretending the gear always made it easier.
Like most people, we started with big ideas. Automatic systems. Smart tech. Overbuilt fixes for problems that did not need to be complicated.
Reality hit fast. Camping was already enough work. The gear did not need to add to it.
Before we even owned a rooftop tent, friends who did kept telling us the same thing: "We love our tents… we just hate installing and removing them."
So we stopped overthinking it and built something simple. The first prototype worked. Then a stranger at an expo pointed at our table and said, "I'll take a set." That moment changed everything.
Four years later, those mounts are still doing the job they were built to do: saving time, saving frustration, and making adventure easier without asking for attention.
That mindset became the foundation of Stark Side Gear.
What We Believe
- Gear should earn its place
- Adventure is messy, and that is part of the appeal
- Honesty beats hype every time
- Not everything needs to shine, but it damn well should work
- We do not pretend camping is always peaceful
- We do not overpromise
- We do not believe your gear should become obsolete because someone released a "new version"
What We Are Not
- Chasing trends
- Building gear for influencers who never use it
- Pretending every trip goes according to plan
We are here for the moments between the highlight reels: the ones that actually shape the story.
The Stark Side Is a Mindset
It is the moment the campfire burns low and the stories get honest. Gear that is dirty, coffee that is cold, and laughter that is louder than the rain on the tent. Knowing things will not go perfectly and going anyway.
If that sounds familiar, you are already one of us.
