Kevin runs a 4x4 Colorado Alto Elite tent on a Sherpa rack on his third-gen 4Runner. The tent sits so low on the rack he can't access the mounting points without disassembling the rack — and his 270° awning won't fit because the factory brackets are too tall for the gap. The low-profile mount lifts the tent enough to fix both problems.
Where we met Kevin
We met Kevin at Overland Expo Pacific Northwest in Redmond, Oregon. He's a 4x4 enthusiast and an engineer. He'd been fabricating his own custom awning brackets because nothing off-the-shelf worked with his rig.
What was actually broken
Kevin's setup ran into three problems, all caused by the same root cause — minimal clearance between his tent and the rack:
- No room to install. Tent sits too low on the rack. Factory mounting points are inaccessible without taking parts of the rack apart.
- Awning won't fit. Factory 270° awning brackets are too tall to slot between the crossbars and the tent. Kevin had to fabricate custom mounts to make it work.
- Rattle on the daily drive. Tent in close contact with the crossbars on every road bump.
How the low-profile mount solves it
The low-profile mount lifts the tent slightly off the rack. That single change does three things:
- Opens up clearance. Mounting-point access becomes possible. So does the awning install — factory brackets fit without custom fabrication.
- Stops the rattle. Aluminum-on-aluminum contact between tent and crossbar is what causes the noise. Lifting the tent breaks the contact.
- Quick attach and detach. Kevin doesn't have to disassemble his rack or remove his awning every time he wants to take the tent off. That alone changes how often he uses it.
